Pat Stuart is an Australian dog trainer, educator and coach who helps owners, handlers and professional trainers develop clearer communication with their dogs. His work encompasses pet dogs, high-drive dogs, canine sport, decoy development and the education of people who want to improve their practical training skills.
Pat places particular emphasis on motivation, communication and coaching. Rather than treating dog training as a collection of isolated techniques, he encourages handlers to understand how their timing, movement, reinforcement, pressure and expectations influence the dog in front of them.
From Special Forces to professional dog training
Pat’s interest in dog training began after bringing an adult dog into his home and discovering that the situation required far more knowledge and skill than he initially possessed. That experience led him to study canine behaviour and training with increasing intensity.
After more than 12 years in Army Special Forces, Pat moved into professional dog training full-time in 2015. His military background and subsequent experience as a trainer have contributed to a practical coaching style focused on preparation, clear communication, adaptability and the development of both dog and handler.
Dog training and coaching
Pat has studied with respected trainers in Australia and internationally, including several years learning from Bart Bellon. He has examined approaches ranging from hands-off training through to more traditional systems involving pressure and correction.
This broad education helped Pat develop an approach that does not depend upon one tool or isolated method. Instead, he considers the dog’s motivation, the clarity of the handler’s communication and the quality of the coaching process.
Pat is particularly recognised for his ability to explain complex training concepts in language that owners and trainers can understand and apply. His education is designed to help people improve their decision-making and practical ability, not simply reproduce a technique without understanding its purpose.
Serious Dog Business
Pat is the owner of Serious Dog Business, an education and coaching platform for dog owners, professional trainers, working-dog handlers and canine-sport competitors.
Through structured courses, practical demonstrations, group coaching and individual feedback, Pat teaches the training principles and handler skills he applies in real situations. Topics include motivation, arousal, reinforcement, communication, leash handling, raising high-drive puppies, decoy work and the development of reliable behaviour.
Serious Dog Business gives students access to detailed education that extends beyond short training tips. Its purpose is to help people understand why training works, recognise where communication is breaking down and make better decisions for the individual dog.
Canine sport and professional development
Pat is a certified NePoPo® instructor, an active Protection Sports Association competitor and a certified decoy. He also serves as the PSA Assistant Regional Director for Australia.
His involvement in canine sport provides an environment in which training, handling and performance can be continually tested and refined. Pat uses these experiences to help handlers understand how motivation, control, confidence and precision interact under pressure.
The Canine Paradigm podcast
Pat co-hosts The Canine Paradigm with Glenn Cooke. Since 2017, the podcast has built an international audience through direct and often challenging conversations about dog training, behaviour, learning, canine sport, professional standards and the wider dog industry.
Pat brings his experience as a trainer, educator, former Special Forces soldier and canine-sport competitor to the show. His ability to break down complicated subjects, question assumptions and connect theory with practical experience has become an important part of The Canine Paradigm.
